Chapter 33: Post 9/11 GI Bill® / FRY Scholarship

Benefit Overview

Chapter 33: Post 9/11 GI Bill®: Member must have at least 90 days of aggregate active duty service after Sept. 10, 2001 and are still on active duty, or if you are an honorably discharged veteran or were discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days, you may be eligible for this VA-administered program. This bill is transferable to dependents.

Fry Scholarship: Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship (Fry Scholarship) is a scholarship for children and spouses of certain Veterans. The parent or spouse died in the line of duty on or after September 11, 2001, while serving in the Armed Forces, or was a member of the Selected Reserve who died from a service-connected disability.

    • College Specific Fees (example: Engineering Fee, COB fee)
    • SOS Orientation Fee / Camp War Eagle Student Fee
    • Graduation Fee – If graduation course is approved by advisor.
    • Auburn Online fees
    • Specific Flight Charges
    • Other instructional fees
  • A monthly housing allowance (MHA) is based on the Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) for an E-5 with dependents at the location of the school (for BAH rates please visit www.gibill.va.gov). For those enrolled solely in distance learning the housing allowance payable is equal to ½ the national average BAH for an E-5 with dependents. Active duty students and their spouses cannot receive the MHA. The stipend is paid proportionately based on enrollment.
  • Benefit pays a book stipend at the rate of $41.67 per credit hour. This stipend has a maximum payable amount of $1,000 per academic year (Fall, Spring, and Summer)

Taking ROTC classes? Fill out this VA form and declare ”Goal of Professional Officer” in section 4B in order to receive Federal VA Education benefits for taking these classes. Sign the back page and turn the completed form into the VRC.
